Maria Hinojosa is many things: An icon, legendary journalist, and an inspiration. For all of her accomplishments, this Extraordinary Woman Making History takes tremendous pride in providing much needed visibility to the Latinx community through her award-winning reporting. Over the course of the last 26 years, Maria has done just that via Latino USA, her nationally syndicated public radio show on NPR.
In revealing her devotion to unearthing these stories, she states: “There was no conversation about immigration, Latino immigration, Mexican immigration. We were invisible. I needed to tell these stories. I wanted to tell these stories. I wanted to see myself. I wanted my kids to see themselves and I wanted other young people to see themselves too.”
Outside of her illustrious journalism career, Maria is the founder, president, and CEO of The Futuro Media Group, an independent media platform that produces community-based journalism, the recipient of an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from DePaul University, a Paley Center for Media/Museum of Television and Radio Hall of Famer, the author of two books, and a familiar name on the annual 100 Most Influential Hispanics list.
